STEVE-O!

So I'm trying to make a "series"(I guess) for my portfolio, based on the Lady GAGA and the M.I.A. portraits I did. I couldn't really think of anyone, and I thought, well, maybe I should to a male portrait, since I have none. I remember when I was watching the slow-mo intro to Jackass 3D that portraits of all of the guys from this scene would be great! Maybe when it comes out on DVD I'll do that. But for now we have to live with this. :D

Halloween '10

So this Halloween I promised my friend Nick that I would do his makeup for the holiday. He wanted to be a zombie, so we did some research on different tutorials, bought supplies, and went to town! It turned out awesome, and he got a lot of compliments. Hey, maybe I'll even look into doing some theatrical make-up!

March of Dimes Masquerade Masks

Last week, my Media & Advertising teacher told us about the March of Dimes Masquerade Ball. She said that we would have the opportunity to make masks as a donation that would be put up for auction. The masks would also have a little segment on the Monday morning news. We were all excited, however there was one small problem, the mask making date was scheduled for Tuesday, and none of us could meet up before then. Class was Thursday, and I volunteered to help make masks over the weekend. Well, looks like no one else wanted to spend their weekend making masks. So, all three of my masks were aired on CBS Better Mornings this morning. I recorded it (bootleg style, sorry) and now it is here for all my fans to view. I also took some great pictures. Please, Enjoy!

Another Day, Another Website

Still have a few tweaks to add to this, but its basically finished. Some things were a pain like the background image. And this artist has a huge portfolio, so optimizing all of those images was insane!!!
But here it is!

I Really Like This One

So I tried out a new tutorial today that I found at abduzeedo.com. It was really fun, and I actually kinda love the outcome. What do you think? Do you think I can take off on this style or is it overused?

Vector Vs. Traditional

So I'm trying to establish my illustration identity with two types of styles. Traditional, realistic, painterly and digital vector. Today, I converted my black palm cockatoo that was originally done in colored pencil to my vector style. I added some cheesy illustrator textures, but I really like it! :D

A Big Revision

So in portfolio prep, I've decided that I want to take all of my crap work and redo it in my awesome new style. This one I created last summer in scratch board. Its based on the song In the Year 2525, specifically on the 6565 verse.
In the year of 6565
Won't need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your sons, pick your daughters too
From the bottom of a long glass tube

And then I redid it in a posterized vector style with some color.

After I created this, I wanted it to have some significance. So when some one asked why I did this illustration, I would have a legit. answer.

M.I.A. Poster Design Contest

A fellow artist and good friend sent me the link to this contest and I was psyched! I looked at all the other artwork and I thought, "Oh, this is going to be EASY!" However, as I procrastinated the designs that were posting were getting better and better. So I had to get on the ball. I designed the poster with winning it in mind. I'm not particularly interested in any prizes, but I've be a huge M.I.A. fan for a long time now and I think I fit the description very well. Here goes!

Description:

M.I.A.'s third album "/\/\/\Y/\" drops July 13th on Interscope Records.

In recognition that music and art are agents of global change, M.I.A. turns to our community of Allies to create an epic large-format poster that commemorates the release of "/\/\/\Y/\".

The winning design should be truly revolutionary, like her latest video "Born Free". The winning Ally will receive a $250 activation fee and copies of all of M.I.A.'s releases. Designs are due by midnight on July 30.

This one is the very first one I did. Gross! My uncle made a good point, this one seems to just illustrate her new single, "born free" and I want to make a global point in my poster. so I did this.

and then some friends made some good suggestions about form and contrast. Which I fixed. Others made a good point as to how it doesn't have that particular "M.I.A." style. So I added a few things wanting to still keep my original style with a flare of M.I.A. I figure if she wanted a poster in her style she would have done it herself rather than putting out a contest to see who can imitate her the best.

Lady Gaga

Of course, I love Lady Gaga! Who doesn't? Don't answer that, but I decided to do a portrait of her in my new favorite style. I did this one in illustrator and I pulled her out of the border much more like the three deadly sins. I forgot to do that for the Nico Vega poster.

NICO VEGA

So Nico Vega posted a new really cool pic of themselves hugging each other. SO COOL! It inspired me to do an illustration of it in a digital style of my 3 Deadly Sins. Which I plan on making digital also. I did a color version and two black and white versions. Let me know what you think!

3/7 Deadly Sins

So for Traditional Illustration, the project was to do an illustration for three of the seven deadly sins. They should have the same style and be able to exist in a series. Can you guess which ones I did? These were created with marker on bristol. I'm not crazy about the first one, maybe I'll redo it. Hit me up for any suggestion also! info@salinasillustration.com

a little birdie told me...

The greeting cards are finally done! YAY! My original ideas were to add "nice new hair cut" and "sorry I ruffled your feathers" however they turned into "be unique its your birthday" and "missing you." I think it fits the set better. I also made a cover and insert for the box they will come in. They are being shipped in today and I cannot wait!
SO EXCITED!
If you really like, give me a shout and we can arrange to get your exclusive SALINAS greeting cards!

The Last Few Weeks of Intership Work

My sketches for the greeting cards were approved, so working on those for a while. I completed the first two cards. Basically, I just cut the colored paper to format, taped off the edges and transfered the sketch. It was pretty easy, but time consuming. Colored pencil produces great results, however you get out of it what you put in. I really liked how the cards turned out.

They seem to get more colorful as I progress. I hope that is okay, and the theme can tie them all together.

For this project. I did use a technique that I have never used before. In class, I have always heard of people using alcohol to blend. I figured I should try it this time to see what all the fuss is about, and it turns out its a pretty useful technique. I used it in the first two cards, however, towards the end I decided I like my way better. I tend to use different colors, white and the colorless blender. I’ve done this since highschool, and why change now?

My sponsor and I took a little hiatus with the pool client, however we are back to working on his ideas. These were the first sketches.

He really did like the silohuette however he asked me to remove the net and the sun. He also got more specific on what he wanted. He wants the name of the company in a cool font on the back of the t-shirt, maybe arched and the illustration with some other info. On the front, he just wants a logo over the chest. He was thinking an “e.”

I started with some digital sketches of the back. I figured I should do this first, see what he likes, and then design the front.
On the next page, you can see first I tried a simple arial font and outlined the word “clear.” Then I made it like a wave with a blue-ish “clear.” Then I changed the font to a more “handwritten” font. I really like this style, its sort of new, but not modern. It has really become popular in the last few years. I figured this could be a good solution because my sponsor told me the client was a really laid back cool guy.

Recent Paintings

The reason I've have been finding so many old pieces is because we are moving to a different apartment and I have been cleaning house. Recently, I found this painting from Fall 2009, I believe. Our assignment was to recreate a master's painting. I did the prodigal son by Rembrant. My teacher did not write down any comments about it, however, I know there are some things that need to be fixed. We'll find out by the time portfolio preview comes around.

This assignment was an allegorical self-portrait. It was inspired by the movie the Emerald Forest. REALLY GOOD, it can be seen on youtube.com. I'm not crazy about the idea, but I don't really have a clue of what else I would do. I like myself the way I am and I can't imagine other ways people see/think of me. Maybe this assignment was a bit too abstract for me. I will get a better scan of the photo when my teacher grades and returns it.

I really love painting. It gives a great sense of accomplishment because you get out of it what you put into it. I put a lot of time and effort into my paintings. I would like to paint more often and become faster at it. These paintings took me probably 20+ hours.
